I come from a family of diabetics on both sides of my family(father has it, his mother and father had it, mom's great grandmother has it, etc.) so I have a high chance of getting it one day and I really don't want to get it so Is there a possibility that it could skip me if I take care of myself?

Type 1 diabetes is genetic, which you cannot avoid.
Type 2 diabetes you can develop over time. If your family has had type 2 diabetes, you can avoid it by having a healthy diet and exercising.

Watching your diet and exercising. If you are a healthy weight, you have less of a chance of developing Type II diabetes. I don't blame you for trying to prevent diabetes, it's often a very damaging problem that robs people of their vision, kidney function, and sense of touch - just to name a few.

Are your other family members obese? Being overweight is generally the precursor to type 2 diabetes.

My husband was diagnosed (he is hyper glycaemic) when he was 12 largely due to a family history. His sister however does not have it. Unfortunately it gets worse as you get older and there are complications that can arise. While it cant exactly be prevented, you can take care of yourself to hopefully ward off the chances. Eat healthy foods and also exercise regularly. These are part of diabetes management too. My husband eats alot of salads which keep his levels down and I would recommend something along those lines. Walking maybe 30 minutes a day is the prefect exercise. Also watch your weight, being overweight especially later in life (around your 40s) can greatly increase your chances. There are many myths surrounding it so try looking up the various diabetes management and support groups for more information.

well first off eat healthy, eat your fruits and veggies. Eat organic if you can. Stay away from sugars that are harmful such as white sugar, stick to honey, maple syrup, raw sugar, sucanut, organic cane suger, xylitol, agave, but don't eat to much. I am so happy that your are looking for tips and taking action :) everyone should think like you :) people would be healthier.. good luck and look up healthy eating such as fresh juicing and eating raw foods :) organic is the best. If you don't understand why organic is better then conventional then look it up. what people spray on there lawn is what there spraying on your veggies and everyone knows that your not supposed to play on the grass after they sprayed it then why the heck should we be eating it.

Have a daily diet that does not binge on carbohydrates. Yes, you CAN have sweets, and pastas, and rice, but in moderated quantities. Do not eat the HUGE portion sizes that are offered by restaurants, and try to limit your portions to the serving size (google serving sizes for foods)... Exercise regularly, and do not spend many hours idle, without moving much -- sitting for long, long hours without doing much to stretch, or cut the the idle time in between a bit, puts stress on the metabolic system. If you still get Diabetes, do NOT blame yourself. Lifestyle is only one of the many factors that can contribute to someone getting Diabetes... But it is NOT the only one, contrary to the misinformation they present on TV all the time, or in the news. You can live a healthy, good life WITH Diabetes, and even still enjoy some sweets, and carbohydrates, when managed in moderation.
