Sounds like an infection.
Call your eye doctor first thing in the morning and make an appointment. They will get you in right away for an eye infection because you need to be seen right away to have it taken care of.
Best thing you can do until morning is make sure you are NOT wearing contact lenses if you have them. Do NOT use anything like Visine. However, artificial tears such as Optiv and Systane are fine. To help with the mucus, you can just use water and a soft washcloth to keep your eyes clean. A cold compress will make your eyes feel better, although a warm compress will actually treat the infection (heating the area increases blood flow and increases the immune cells getting to your eye).
If you eye is stuck shut in the morning due to the mucus, you can use warm water and a washcloth to gently open it up.

The most probable causes are
1) Sleep deprivation
2) Lack of vitaminsSleep deprivation causes eye strain, as they don't receive the rejuvination effects of 8 hours of rest. This causes strain on the ciliary muscles, and causes twitching much in the same way that sprinters' legs can be seen to twitch from exhaustion after a big race.
A lack of vitamins is also an issue that should be considered. Vitamins and minerals are essential for the proper working and coordination of your body. Amino acids, in particular, require certain compounds that the body cannot produce. Amino acids are associated with protein, and therefore muscles. Again, the ciliary muscles may not be properly maintained and result in twitching.
Try having a few naps during the day, taking multivitamins, or eating a well-balanced diet.
