I understand why so many vaccines are made in the first place. Our government pays the vaccine companies millions of dollars so they make the vaccine, in the first place. Since it is our tax dollars that pay those millions of dollars to the medical industry to make such vaccines, why are these vaccines then shipped to other countries instead of being given for free to our underclass population?

Why does the USA send unused flu vaccines to other countries instead of giving them to our own peopl

Your avatar is so pretty and upbeat I hate to throw some f'd up news your way. Our government has been repeatedly caught sending low quality meds - stuff not good enuf for us, to other countries!
In specific - or what I do have specific knowledge of from my boss is that his wife works for the gov in health (he's not big on specifics) but she told him and he told me that bad condoms and low quality meds are constantly being sent to Africa.
I was in shock and still am. But I have no faith in any government so . . .

There is a hierarchy of who is more vulnerable for to receive the vaccine, that is why. Once the major groups eg health care workers, and those who are in need (asthma, lung problems, disability, lung disorders) are vaccinated, I guess this is why its being shipped to even more vulnerable places. I get ur point totally, but I get the other reasons too, I am a student nurse, and I have been offered the jab, but no other members of my family have. I trust the government to make sure that we will be all sorted if and when its important - its not flu season in britain any more so maybe the other countries that r getting it are still in that bracket, - dont worry tho, its well established now, we will all get it if need be

Demand.
We have excess because no one else wants it. The vaccine is already practically given away to anyone who wants it.
Other countries could use it. Better for it not to go to waste.

We are giving it away for free. For H1N1, all providers who registered to receive the vaccine were given it free and local health departments were barred from charging anything for it including an administration fee, at least in my state. People in the jurisdiction were given many, many opportunities to obtain a free vaccine. In the case of other childhood vaccines, there are many programs (i.e. Vaccines for Children) that provide free vaccines to kids.
