Why is it so easy for me to crack the bones in my back, neck and chest?

For a long time now, I've had the terrible habit of cracking my back and neck. Lately I've started to be able to crack the bones in my sternum. It's at the point where if I don't crack them, they hurt! It's annoying because I know how bad it is for your health and that it can cause problems, but I have to do it so the pain goes away.
Any suggestions on stopping this bad habit and what are some of the health risks involved with cracking my bones? I also crack my knuckles in my hands and they're now swollen. HELP PLEASE!

    Thanks :)
Also, it hurts more when I DON'T crack it and I feel relief when I do!

you can't "crack" your sternum, you crack your back and it feels as though you do.

You are not cracking bones - it is the joint and you are popping the synovial fluid or air within the cartiledge.
The bones in the Sternum are not mobile so as someone said you are probably 'cracking' a back joint.

whoa slow down!!!!!! if it hurts when you DONT pop im sure thats worse than them hurting when you DO pop.
and you're certainly not supposed to be able to crack and chest bones!!!!
my father is now dealing with all his bad habits of back cracking
he has to get more surgery on his back for his discs being CRACKED and slipping...
it will grind them down and the soft tissue between your joints will wear away
    causing you EVEN MORE pain....
try to see a chiropractor or something
they can pop it the RIGHT way
[i know the 'right' way sounds stupid]
